The Assistant Dean for Development and Alumni Affairs will report directly to the Dean of the ! University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy and will be a member of the Schools Executive Council and Administrative Team working closely with the Associate Deans and Department Chairs.

THE SCHOOL
The Un! iversity of Maryland, School of Pharmacy is the 4th oldest pha! rmacy school in the nation and is highly ranked among all schools by US News and World Report. It is an exciting time in the history of the School as it continues to grow. A satellite program established at Shady Grove in 2007 increased both enrollment and faculty ranks by 30% and a new, well-equipped seven story addition opened this summer in Baltimore.
UNIVERSITY LEADERSHIP
Jay A. Perman, MD, (http://www.umaryland.edu/offices/president/bio) was appointed president of the University on July 1, 2010. One of Dr. Permans key initiatives was to develop a campus-wide strategic plan (http://www.umaryland.edu/strategicplan). One of the key themes of the plan is to achieve pre-eminence as an innovator in our missions of education, research, clinical care, and public service. Dean Natalie D. Eddington, PhD, became dean of the University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy in August 2007. Dean Eddington, an alumna of the School, was formerly chair of its Department of Pharm! aceutical Sciences. She is a nationally known expert in drug delivery and pharmacokinetics.
THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
Strategic Leadership
- Provide internal and external leadership for Development. Conceptualize, design and implement a strategic plan for building a development program that is sophisticated and multi-faceted; identify/establish and apply appropriate metrics to evaluate all aspects of the programs success and provide routine periodic updates to the Dean.
- Develop productive relationships with the Dean, other members of her senior leadership group, faculty and key external partners to leverage their strategic participation in the fundraising process. Work with Senior Associate Dean to develop business plans/proposals and accountability measures for large donors to support major School initiatives.
- Train and mentor a staff of 4 to form a highly functioning team whose productivity is measured i! n concrete, tangible outcomes established in consultation with the dean! .
- Assist Dean in maximizing the effectiveness of the Schools Board of Visitors. Support the nominating process, which provides guidelines for Board membership and articulates the roles and responsibilities for board members. Identify and recommend potential new board members to the Dean.
- Evaluate all activities designed to raise external funding, in light of the Strategic Plan and priorities of the School of Pharmacy. Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, close and steward individual gift prospects from among more than 2,500 alumni and friends.
- Build, manage and mentor a team capable of building effective programs in major gifts, annual fund, planned giving and in-kind gifts.
- In consultation and coordination with the Office of External A! ffairs, implement strategies for securing corporate and foundation gifts. Solicit corporate and foundation support for the Schools signature events.
- Continue development and cultivation of activities and outreach to alumni, including implementation and oversight of social networking opportunities and the launch of iModules as the premier alumni networking site for the School.

- Empower staff through active and inclusive communication and delegation, and ensure staff accountability for excellence and outcomes through clearly defined, collaboratively-established and measurable goals. Provide leadership and direct! ion to staff and personally model best practices.
- Oversee the ! departments budget, development information systems, personnel and other administrative issues.
- Serve as liaison and maintain partnership with University of Maryland Foundation and University of Maryland Baltimore Foundation, as well as the UMBs Office of External Affairs. Participate with peers as an active member of the UMB Campus Fundraising Council and other university fundraising committees or strategic planning sessions as requested by the Dean.
- Other duties as assigned the by the Dean
- Bachelors degree required; advanced degree desirable.
- 7 or more years of broad-based related experience spent progressively building a background in the various individual giving functions with at least 1 to 3 years of supervisory or managerial experience in
- Development/Fundraising
- Track record in the cultivation, solicitation and closing of major gifts ($50,000+)
- Development exp! erience in higher education or other non-profit organization
- Unquestionable integrity (Credit history review may be required.)
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative for projects and programs
- Knowledge of best practices in the development field in general and in the areas of individual giving (annual fund, major fits and planned giving)
- Demonstrated experience with Corporate and Foundation fundraising
- Demonstrated strong oral/written communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
- Strong managerial, organizational, analytical thinking skills with an ability to solve problems and make decisions
- Demonstrated track record of meeting deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to work as an effective team player with a senior administrative team and with the development and alumni relations staff
- Ability to think creatively and collaboratively with th! e chief development offices on the campus, and the Office of External A! ffairs, in an effort to identify, launch and fund interdisciplinary programs.
- Ability to network and interact, as well as support effective partnerships with key groups and individuals at the school level
- Ability to prioritize ongoing and new projects, as well as conduct research and gather information
- Leadership, coaching and teambuilding skills to strengthen and cultivate relationships
- Skill in dealing with people: diplomacy, tact, discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability and willingness to travel
