The Acute Care Physician Assistant will work collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team that provides comprehensive care to cardiovascular patients on the Progressive Cardiac Care Unit (PCCU) as well as in the Cardiovascular Interventional Lab (CVIL) and the Outpatient Clinic setting. The Physician Assistant will work under the joint supervision of the Assistant Director of Medicine Nursing and the Director of Electrophysiology. The Physician Assistant will also work collaboratively with mid-level providers, nurses, pharmacists, radiology techs, and Cardiology fellows. The Physician Assistant will obtain history and perform physical examinations on newly admitted patients, write orders for medications including pre- and post-procedure orders, obtain informed consent for procedures, complete discharge summaries, and other treatments as necessary. The Physician Assistant will participate in daily rounds to report progress of specific patients and help to develop care and discharge plans. The Physician Assistant will assist the attending physician during Electrophysiology diagnostic, interventional and research procedures performed in Interventional labs, and complete procedure report forms. The Physician Assistant will assist in the care of patients in the outpatient setting and in the device clinic. This will involve assisting attending electrophysiologists and also having an independent patient and device follow-up clinic. The Physician Assistant will work collaboratively with case managers, nursing staff and attending physicians to assist in the care of patients who may require urgent follow up post discharge. The Physician Assistant will educate patients and families regarding the nature of their clinical problems, prognoses, and options for continued care. The Physician Assistant will participate as a teacher and as a learner in educational activities in the PCCU, CVIL and Outpatient Center.

The Physician Assistant will practice within the guidelines of the unit, department and institution and in accordance with the Physician Assistant-Physician Written Agreement required and approved by the state of Maryland. The Physician Assistant will be granted affiliate staff privileges by the Johns Hopkins Hospital Medical Board; these privileges list specific tasks and are reviewed annually. The ability to incorporate into practice theoretical concepts and advanced clinical skills with patients, families, and interdisciplinary health care team members is necessary. Analytical abilities are necessary to diagnose patients and to develop and implement plans of action for long and short term management of acute and chronic health. Advanced interpersonal skills are necessary to communicate effectively with all members of the interdisciplinary health care team to enhance collaboration and problem-solving. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are necessary to provide information to patients and health care personnel. The Acute Care Physician Assistant must be able to function effectively in a fluid, dynamic, and rapidly changing environment.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree; Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body; Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program. Must be licensed as PA in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Experience may be considered in lieu of bachelor's degree, as permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Current CPR and ACLS certification required. IBHRE certification is desirable but not required. The successful candidate will be expected to become IBHRE certified within two years of starting in the position. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Experience in inpatient preferred. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date. Excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

General computer knowledge and ability to use computerized medical information systems.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Maryland licensure and national certification as a physician assistant. Experience in HIV primary care. Analytical ability necessary to evaluate health status of patient and to implement proper care plan. Interpersonal, communication skills necessary to interview, teach and counsel patients. Ability to work well as a member of a health care team with a high degree of self-motivation. Ability to work with culturally diverse patient, staff and community populations. Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and follow through. Experience in preceptor skills with health care providers and students. Travel to various health facilities throughout the state of Maryland, transport patient records and educational materials.
